This study addresses the challenge of defining what 'better' means for online communities by directly eliciting values from their members. Through a survey of 212 members across 627 unique subreddits, the research team collected 1,481 responses to develop a comprehensive taxonomy of community values, comprising 29 subcategories within nine top-level categories. This taxonomy allows for a principled, quantitative analysis of community values, offering new perspectives on common research problems like managing new member influxes and highlighting underexplored areas such as content quality and community size. The study emphasizes the importance of considering the values of vulnerable community members and makes the developed codebook available for future research.
