This paper advocates for the integration of social, emotional, and affective considerations into information science research, proposing a socio-emotional paradigm. By reviewing literature and analyzing user motivations on the Academia section of Stack Exchange, the study highlights tensions between the community's information-centric focus and the users' desire for social and emotional engagement. These findings suggest online communities serve as boundary objects, accommodating diverse user needs and perspectives. The proposed socio-emotional paradigm aims to enrich social informatics and information science by revealing underlying concerns and value differences, suggesting that emotional and affective research, which has been somewhat peripheral, should be more prominently integrated.
