With any community, it is important that inclusivity and diversity are fostered within the community as it helps to create a more inclusive community. Being a leader of a community, one of your most crucial roles is promoting both inclusivity and diversity and also taking action to ensure that your community becomes more inclusive and diverse.


Below are some strategies that you as a leader of a community can use:


Inclusive Policies: Ensuring that you have policies and procedures both developed and implemented is vitally important within a community. Policies such as non-discrimination, affirmative action programs and accessibility measures are all important ones to add to ensure equal opportunities for all community members. 


Setting Clear Expectations: Making it clear to your community that acts of discrimination and bias will not be tolerated within the community and communicating the importance of diversity and inclusivity to your community is vital. This is to ensure that your community provides an atmosphere that includes equal opportunities for all.


Celebrate Differences: As a community leader, organizing things such as events that celebrate the social diversity of the community can help build a sense of belonging for all community members no matter their beliefs, ethnicity or culture.


Addressing Discrimination and Bias: As a leader of a community, not only should you be ensuring that there are policies and procedures in place to prevent discrimination and harassment within the community but also having clear mechanisms when it comes to reporting incidents as well is very important. 


When a report is made, you should always ensure that you take appropriate action when incidents occur.


Educating and Awareness: As a leader, something you can do to spread awareness about the value of diversity and inclusion is to organize workshops which will educate those within your community. This will help prevent stereotypes and biases within the community.


Lead by Example: All leaders of a community should ensure that they lead by example by modelling diverse and inclusive behaviour. 
This can be done by regularly engaging with people from different backgrounds to demonstrate empathy and also show respect to all community members. 


Promoting diversity and inclusion within a community is something that is an ongoing process. It requires patience, commitment and continuous effort from all leaders within the community.


Inclusion and diversity benefit everyone and this is something that is important.
