This research investigates the motivations behind the creation of new online communities, specifically through a survey of over 300 founders on Wikia.com. The study reveals that founders start wikis for various reasons and have different definitions of success, often focusing on niche topics without the expectation of attracting a large contributor base. The findings also show that the approach to community building varies with the founders' goals, suggesting that platform designers should tailor interfaces to better support this diversity.
