This research investigates the social factors influencing hacking behaviors and beliefs by analyzing conversations on hacking forums and subreddits. Using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software, the study assessed linguistic characteristics, revealing variations in language related to honesty, confidence, analysis, and emotional expression across different platforms. Thematic analysis of a subset of text highlighted themes such as knowledge, skill acquisition, honesty, legality, and risk. Contrary to common stereotypes, the analysis found minimal language indicating anger. The study concludes that hacking communities play a significant role in providing social support and identity for their members. Understanding these dynamics could help channel individuals' interests in hacking towards legitimate cybersecurity careers.
