This article addresses the growing importance of digital political engagement and the challenges posed by private control of public forums, as highlighted by recent U.S. court cases like Knight v. Trump. It argues for three key reforms to ensure these digital spaces fulfill their democratic potential: 1) subjecting major private digital forums to democratic oversight, 2) preventing public officials from silencing citizens on social media, and 3) encouraging regular, good-faith engagement between public officials and citizens on these platforms.
